I had no choice but to buy a portable for my smallish living room. I live in a building full of elderly people. I am 75y/o, and I have not had anyone at all in my apartment since before March 13th. (My family gets together via Zoom) Besides, I could not find a professional willing to install an air conditioner indoors. They only come to work on outdoor units. No one said whether or not that was due to the lockdown. This Honeywell unit is light enough that I could drag the box down the hall to my door and get it working with no help.Consumer Reports says that portable air conditioners tend to be noisy and inefficient compared to window air conditioners. A good article on the October 1, 2017 Federal Trade Commission (FTC) standard (ashrae-128) for portable air conditioners explains that single hose portables are less efficient because they draw in air from the room--through any cracks--and blow it out a window, much hotter of course, through the hose. This one in particular looks to be on the low ashrae-128 rating side. Window air conditioners and double hose portables draw air directly from outdoors and blow it back out much hotter than it was. So single hose portables have to do double duty, cooling the room and cooling the air they draw into the room to blow out. It occurs to me that I might leave my door to the hallway open a crack for that. The building does not have central air, obviously, but the hallways are air conditioned. The remote that came with this unit works. Note that it works by infrared like an old TV remote: That means it has to be in the line of sight with the front of the unit--no problem for me, especially since I use a PC and not a smartphone with wi-fi.I set a certain temperature and let the air conditioner turn on and off. The temperature has stayed steady at what I have set--about 77 degrees F. I live on the top floor of a six story brick building with a flat roof that gets very hot on sunny days. My windows face west toward the afternoon sun. I use blackout curtains, which do help, The outside temperature in the shade has gotten hot since I got the unit running nine days ago. I expect it will get about six or seven degrees hotter most days from now through September. Running on automatic, as I said, the air conditioner has been off (i.e., running on fan only) more of the time than it has been on, so I think there is reason to hope that it will keep on doing the job even if it has to run more of the time. The adapter has one essential part and two optional parts for different size window frames. My vertical sliding window calls for 46 inches in length, almost the full length. It works.I used strong packaging tape to seal the spaces between the adapter and the metal window frame, doing no damage. If the window frame were wood than I suppose I would have needed the inexpensive optional foam sealer that is shown on this page, sold separately.I am very glad that I have high quality noise cancellation headphones. I am sensitive to noise, and I doubt that I could stand it without either those headphones or ear plugs. I wear ear plugs when I am sleeping. After I bought this I discovered that Consumer Reports rates the Whynter ARC-12SDH portable higher for predicted reliability than what appears to be the previous version of this same Honeywell unit, but the difference is small--10 for the Whynter and 9 for the Honeywell. Owner satisfaction is 5 out of 10 for four of those rated, including both of these. A fifth brand's model is rated 4 out of 10 for owner satisfaction. So far the unit has succeeded in blowing the water it draws from the air out the hose and out the window. In other words I have not had to drain it. I hope that will continue. It has kept the room humidity at about 50 percent.I have not tried the dehumidifier function alone. I may never get around to doing that. The unit I bought is black, not white. I think it looks nice. I suppose the colors are irrelevant to the operation.Given the known limitations of portable air conditioners, I am satisfied.,
